When standing alone, the Initials "Z", "C", and "S" also carry the vowel "i" with them. However, when coming after these three initials, the "i" sound is pronounced differently. Also notice that the pronunciation of "Z" and "C" is different than that of the English "Z" and "C." Click on the initial to hear the pronunciation. Listen carefully to the "i" sound in these initials. It almost sounds like the vowel "e" that we have already learned, but a little lighter.
Zi Almost like the English "z," but with a light "d" sound in front of it.
Ci "Ts" like in "Cats"
Si "S" like in "Summer"
